What is an HS code?
The Harmonized System (HS) is the international product-classification standard maintained by the World Customs Organization and used by more than 200 countries. Every product that crosses a border gets an HS code, which determines tariff rates, import/export statistics, and regulatory requirements. Getting the code right matters: it decides what duty you pay and whether your shipment clears customs without delay.
How HS codes are structured
HS codes are hierarchical. Taking 9403.60 (other wooden furniture) as an example:
| Digits | Level | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Chapter | 94 | Furniture; bedding, mattresses; lamps |
| 4 | Heading | 9403 | Other furniture and parts thereof |
| 6 | Subheading | 9403.60 | Other wooden furniture |
The 6-digit subheading is harmonized worldwide. Individual countries extend it — the U.S. uses 10-digit HTS numbers for imports and 10-digit Schedule B numbers for exports, both built on the same 6-digit HS root.
Frequently asked questions
What is an HS code?
An HS (Harmonized System) code is a standardized numerical code used by customs authorities worldwide to classify traded products. It is maintained by the World Customs Organization and used by more than 200 countries. Every product crossing a border is assigned one — it determines tariff rates, trade statistics, and regulatory requirements.
How are HS codes structured?
HS codes are hierarchical: the first 2 digits are the chapter (e.g. 94 — furniture), the first 4 digits are the heading (9403 — other furniture and parts), and 6 digits are the subheading (9403.60 — other wooden furniture). The 6-digit level is harmonized internationally; countries extend it further (8–10 digits) for their own tariff schedules.
What is the difference between HS, HTS, and Schedule B codes?
All three share the same first 6 digits. HS is the international 6-digit standard. HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) is the 10-digit U.S. import classification used to determine duty rates. Schedule B is the 10-digit U.S. export classification. If you are importing into the U.S., you file under an HTS number; the 6-digit HS code is its international root.
How do I find the right HS code for my product?
Search by a plain-language product description (e.g. “wooden furniture” or “lithium batteries”) and review the matching subheadings and their chapter context. For a binding classification, consult a licensed customs broker — the legally correct code depends on material, function, and composition.
Is this HS code lookup free?
Yes. Searching the full HS catalog is free with no account required. Each result links to free product pages showing real U.S. import shipment volumes, top importers, and top suppliers from U.S. Customs bill of lading data.
